West Surrey Racing are a highly experienced BTCC team having run race winning works teams for Honda, Ford and MG. For three years from 2001 to 2003 they ran and developed the works MG taking 7 wins, the strongest year being 2002 when they finished 2nd in the Teams and Manufacturers championships.
The team continued with the MG's for a number of seasons without works backing. In 2004 they replaced the heavy V6 engines with a lighter Judd 4 cylinder units, these allowed better weight distribution. In 2006 they received substantial backing from RAC finally allowing them to unleash the full potential of the car. Colin Turkington finished 2nd in the championship taking 2 Wins and many podiums. Collard who had raced with the team during the lean period cruelly faired less well.
For 2007 the switch to s2000 meant the team had to run a different car if they wished to win the championship. The car they chose was the BMW 320si E90 as used in the WTCC. The team have support from BMW.
The team did well with the BMW, for the first time in ages BMW was a force to reckoned with in the BTCC again. The team took 16 wins in the Indepedent class, Turkington scooping the Indepedent title. They also won four races outright. For 2008 the super quick Colin Turkington stays with the team and is joined by singer seater ace Stephen Jelley. This should be a strong line up.
